10 Resume Red Flags

If you’re looking for a job, be sure you don’t make these resume mistakes. When I see these things on a resume, I’m much less likely to schedule an interview, especially spelling and grammatical errors. The job I’m hiring for is all about attention to details; spelling and grammatical mistakes don’t give me confidence that you’re paying attention to detail or that you have good formal writing skills.

Here’s an interesting article discussing 10 practices that companies should do away with. It’s not really for middle or bottom managers, it’s directed more at executive/senior management and Human Resources, though a couple of the items do apply to managers at all levels. It recommends doing away with things such as 360 degree feedback and clock watching.

A Manager’s Job

The most important part of a manager’s job is not managing or supervising people, providing people with work, managing or guiding projects, providing status reports to senior management or the rest of the organization, creating or modifying processes, creating or maintaining documentation, sitting in meetings, etc.

No, it is none of that. The most important part of a manager’s job is infinitely more important than all that. It’s really not all that difficult either. Yet many manager’s fail at it miserably.

The most important part of a manager’s job is simply this:

Ensuring that the people who work for you have the tools, skills, knowledge and training they need to succeed at their job.

The manager that can do this not only gains the trust and respect of his subordinates, but also gains their support.

When the people who work for you are successful, you, as their manager, are also successful.

So, go find out what your people need to be successful and give it to them!

In the beginning of January, my Director asked me to take on night shift acting lead duties in addition to my test engineer responsibilities. During the last 3 months, I’ve recommended a few changes in the department, which were well received and are in various stages of implementation, as well as continue testing software, updating test plans and all of my other normal activities. Turns out that my Director had some reservations about me and needed to see me in action, which I figured. So that’s why I wasn’t offered the Night Shift QA Manager position back in August 2007. Well a little patience goes a long way as I’ve been promoted to Night Shift QA Manager, effective today.
